  1. This is very sad on how the teachers in the school treat the students. What I mean is that they don't really care about the students, they just want to be paid..... The students have feels to you know, so try to make it easier on them. Like my Math teacher gives at least six pages of HomeWork a night, same as spanish.... at least try to make the students feel that the teachers want them to pass, the teachers give too much work.... like they want students to drop out, and you can at least use the money you earn from the school and try to improve the classrooms, all I seen was the big t.v screens in the cafeteria.

And those four post up there are not students, some are 9 minutes or less.

This blog is a good way for students to tell you their problems.

The available research indicates that the optimum amount of homework time for high school students is 1½ to 2½ hours per night. When students spend more time than that on homework, the positive connection with student achievement diminishes.
If you are having difficulty with your homework you should speak with your guidance counselor. If something is not right then they can share it with me.
Most of our teachers care for their students and work hard to help them get a good education.

  3. I have old photos from the 40's, 50's and 60's of some of GCHS athletic teams. Is there anyone that would like them? My father-in-law coached many of these teams and we would like to share them.
    Thank you
    Barry

  4. Dear Barry: It would be great if we could get those photos. Our hallways celebrate our student work throughout the building and we can proudly display these older photos. Thank you for the offer.

  8. I need your help, I am a parent of two of your students, that have been missing school because the buses that they take to get to school get to their stop late. My kinds gt to ;the bus stop at 7:10 or 7:15 am and some days they wait 45 minutes for a 10 minute ride to get to school. This morning 2-10-09 they waited to 8:10 and finally they gave up. When the buses do get to the stop either they are to crowed or they do not stop. This happen several times and I did coplain to the bus company and the bus depot and I was told, that they will check into it. The first time I was told that they will have a supervisor at the corner of 74th st & Metropolitan to see what is going on. To this day I have not seen anything. So maybe if the school complains about their students not making school because of the buses, the company will do something about. I try hard to keep my kids & your students to get to school and do good, and after waiting 45 minutes, the kids get discourage and go home. I will be sending a letter to the bus company, eventhough I already called and complained. Your cooperation is greatly appreciate.

    Sincerely,
    Santa Tamburello

Please let me know the bus line and the bus number. I will call this in to the NYC hotline. You can also call "311" and voice your complaint.

  10. Dear Ashley:
If you would like to visit the school, it would be best if you had someone specific to see. We are a scanning school and we do not let anyone walk around the building unaccompanied. You can make an appointment to see someone and they can greet you at the main entrance. I hope this helps.

  13. i think this school is over crowded and i think they shouldnt allow so many kids to come to this school its a bad environment

    ReplyDelete
  14. Unfortunately we do not control how many students we have. This is done by the Department of Education and the enrollment center. Ideally our school should have 2400 students and then we would not be considered overcrowded. Currently there are 2750 students enrolled here.

Everyone works hard to make our school environment as safe and secure as possible.

  15. Dear Mr. Scarola: I live in the area and just got a 2009 Grover Cleveland class ring delivered to my address in error. The address is my home address, but it's a private house and nobody lives here by the name it was addressed to. I'm trying to get it back to the proper owner. I called the school Wed. but haven't heard back from anybody yet. I left my phone number with the person who answered the phone in the office. I don't expect you to give me phone number of the student (whose name is withheld here), but ask you to give my phone number to the student so they can contact me if they want their ring back. There was no paperwork inside the small box the ring came it and the return address is a P.O. box in Rhode Island. No luck there either. Either the company messed-up, or the student filled out his home info incorrectly.
What can I do to return the ring?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Anonymous: Thank you for contacting me about the senior ring. You can do two things: One bring it to the front desk, I will let them know if you choose to do that and they can accept it; or, send your email address directly to me, dscarol@schools.nyc.gov. I will then contact you and arrange for the ring to be picked up. Thank you again for letting us know. I'm sure the student will be very grateful. Mr. Scarola

  17. Hello I have just been accepted to the math and science institute at gchs and i just wanted some information
I know nothing about your school whats-so-ever
please help my parents are worried

    ReplyDelete
  18. I sorry to bring this up, but each time my son gets his report card from school there are class added that he has never signed up for. For example, my son has 3-10 and yet the report card has a addition class added on. Normally it would be a good thing but the class is giving him a 45% average for that class, he doesn't even have it on his schedule.

  20. Dear Anonymous: We are very proud of our Math Science program here at Grover Cleveland High School as well as all of our students. Our school is a safe and secure environment which celebrates its students and their work. You are welcome to visit us during the day, after school or on a Saturday. Why don’t you bring your parents here so they can see for themselves? You can speak with some of our students; they are our best ambassadors and they can tell you about our school. Call our Assistant Principal, Guidance @ 718-381-9600 to make an appointment.

Many of our students go on to top colleges and receive prestigious scholarships, such as, Gates, Posse, New York Times, Coca Cola, Seinfeld, CUNY and SUNY Honors, etc. If you apply yourself you will succeed here. Thank you for your question.

  28. Dear Mr. Scarola

I am a 2008 graduate and a current student at St. Lawrence. I am taking an education course called Contemporary Issues in American Education. It requires 15 hours of field experience and I was wondering if I could fulfill them at GC.

  32. I have heard rumors about the school being reviewed and possibly closing, or that the freshmen that started in 2009 would be the last incoming class. Could you comment and/or clarify?

  33. Dear Anonymous:
The New York State (NYS) Education Department has released a list of low performing schools. Unfortunately we are on that list. The main reason we are on this list is due to the fact that we are now designated as a Title I school. Title I schools are governed by more stringent accountability rules. We became a Title I school due to the Federal Government’s Stimulus Funds. NYS then substantially lowered the Title I eligibility level for all NYS schools.

Even though we are on this NYS list, I firmly believe we will not be restructured and will continue to function as Grover Cleveland High School for the current student population and for future students. I am very proud of what our Cleveland community does each and every day. Many wonderful things happen here and will continue to in the future. We have embraced the challenge and will do all that we can to continue the tradition of Grover Cleveland High School.

  34. I am a proud graduate of Grover Cleveland High School (1967). I have very fond memories of the days I spent there. No school is perfect, but there is no question about the dedication of the teachers back then. The teachers prepared us for college and the busness world. Although, I wasn't able to attend college right away, i was able to land a job and have been working for the same company for over 42 years. Thanks Grover Cleveland High School.

    Bob

  36. Dear Mr.Scarola:
Hello. I am a certified Special Education teacher (7-12 grades)/Spanish. I am interested in a probationary position at Grover Cleveland. Now that I hear that the school is closing, I wonder what school or schools will be taking the place of GCHS? When would that information be available for possible teacher candidates?

    Thank you
